Kidney Stones
Medical and minimally invasive surgical management of kidney and ureteric stones.
Laser of kidney stones (lasertripsy) is a surgical procedure used to treat renal or ureteric stones located in the urinary tract. It is usually recommended when patients are unable to pass stones naturally.
During this procedure, a long thin fibre optic camera called a ureteroscope is inserted through bladder and urethra into the ureter (a tube that carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder) or kidney to locate the stone. The stone is subsequently lasered/broken into smaller pieces.
You may be required to repeat the surgery several weeks later to treat remaining stone fragments. In such cases, a ureteric stent will be left in your ureter. This is a thin hollow tube that is inserted into your ureter. This ensures urine drains properly from the kidney, and assists with stone clearance, as well as to reduce the chance of swelling. Our rooms will contact you a few days after your procedure to arrange the stent removal, which may be scheduled anywhere from one week to several weeks after your procedure.
